Breastmilk & Keepsake Jewellery FAQs

Who is Demeter jewellery for?

Demeter pieces are for anyone who wants to carry something meaningful with them.

Our breastmilk collection is made for those who want to preserve their feeding journey. But our keepsake collection is something else entirely - it's for the friend who wants to mark twenty years of a friendship with something lasting. The husband looking for a gift that means more than flowers. The daughter who wants to give her mother something she'll wear every single day. The person who simply wants to keep a piece of somewhere - a beach, a garden, a season - close to them always.

If you have something worth preserving and someone worth giving it to, Demeter can help you make it into something beautiful. Get in touch and we'll talk you through it.

What is breastmilk jewellery?

Breastmilk jewellery is a personal keepsake made by preserving a small amount of your own breastmilk and incorporating it into a piece of jewellery. At Demeter, your milk is carefully prepared and set into your chosen piece, creating a lasting reminder of your feeding journey.

How do I know my milk or traces are handled safely?

We understand exactly what it means to trust us with something so precious.

Every Trace that arrives at our studio is logged and labelled immediately, and kept separately from every other order for the entire time it's with us - nothing is ever combined or shared between pieces.

Every Trace that arrives at our studio is logged and labelled immediately, and kept separately from every other order for the entire time it's with us - nothing is ever combined or shared between pieces. Your kit includes a prepaid return envelope (UK only). We'll email you the moment it arrives, so you're never left wondering.

I trained with Lucy at Mama and the Moon in Ireland, learning to work with breastmilk and keepsake materials safely and correctly - and that same care goes into every order I take.

How do I send my milk or traces?

Once you’ve placed your order, your Demeter Jewellery collection kit will be sent to you in a week if your order requires it.

Inside, you’ll find everything needed to safely prepare and return your breastmilk or traces, along with a simple, thoughtful guide to support you through the process. A prepaid, pre-labelled return box is included for UK customers.

When you’re ready, place your traces inside, complete your information card, and return the parcel to us.
You can also find further guidance on the process here.

How do I send hair, placenta, flowers or gemstones?

Your collection kit includes a small sealable bag for additional traces.

Hair: a small lock, around the thickness of a cocktail stick, gently tied
Placenta: one capsule
Flowers: one pressed or dried flower (or similar if crushed)
Gemstones: if you’re unsure, feel free to get in touch for guidance

Place your traces inside the bag provided and return them, placing them securely in your collection kit.

How is breastmilk preserved for jewellery?

Your breastmilk is carefully prepared and preserved before being incorporated into your chosen piece. Each Trace is individually labelled and kept separately throughout the process, and your milk is handled with the same care and attention from the moment it arrives at the studio.

How is my jewellery returned to me?

Every completed piece is sent via Royal Mail Special Delivery, providing tracking, signature confirmation, and insurance for added peace of mind. A delivery charge applies at checkout to cover this secure service.

What happens to any remaining milk or traces?

In most cases, a small amount of preserved milk will remain after your piece has been created. We keep this safely stored for up to 12 months, should you wish to create an additional piece within that time. After this period, any remaining sample is respectfully disposed of.

Any unused traces will be returned to you alongside your finished jewellery.

How much milk is needed for a piece of breastmilk jewellery?

Only a small amount is required - ideally around 5–10ml (we can work with less if needed). We recommend keeping a little in reserve at home, simply for peace of mind while your parcel is in transit. Please don't send us the last of your milk, in case there is an issue with the post.

Do you offer other metal options?

Yes! In addition to our core range in sterling silver, 14 carat gold and 18 carat gold, we can offer many of our pieces in white gold and rose gold.

Please get in touch to explore the options available.

If I'd like birthstone or botanical fragments, can you supply these?

Absolutely, we can supply these. You can let us know on an order page what you would like, and whether you would like to supply your own fragments or traces.

How do I select my ring size?

You can request a ring sizer if you do not know your ring size already. If you request a ring sizer, one will be added to your collection kit to help you find your size comfortably at home.

Take your time with this step, then note your size on the information card before returning it with your inclusions. If you’re unsure, we’re always here to help you choose the right fit.

How long will my jewellery take to create?

Each piece at Demeter Jewellery is hand prepared with care and intention.

From the moment your milk or inclusions arrive with us, please allow approximately 8–12 weeks for your piece to be created. This allows time for careful preservation, crafting, and finishing, ensuring your jewellery is made slowly and beautifully.

Can I request a bespoke design?

Yes, we welcome bespoke pieces.

If you have something personal in mind, you’re invited to get in touch and we can begin shaping your ideas with you into a truly unique piece for you or your loved one to treasure forever and to help tell your story.
